Datex-Ohmeda (Helsinki, Finland) and Aspect Medical Systems, Inc. (Newton, MA, USA) have entered into a three-part agreement relating to the integration, manufacturing, and distribution of new anesthesia-monitoring technology developed by Aspect Medical.Posted on 12 Sep 2000
Datex-Ohmeda, a leading supplier of anesthesia equipment and services, will integrate Aspect's Bispectral Index (BIS) technology as an optional module in its multiparameter patient-monitoring systems. Aspect will manufacture private-label patient sensors for Datex-Ohmeda's new products under development for monitoring the level of consciousness, while Datex-Ohmeda will distribute Aspect monitors and patient sensors outside the United States, Canada, Japan, and Australia.
Aspect's BIS monitoring systems and sensors directly measure the effects of anesthetics and sedation on the brain, enabling clinicians to better assess and manage a patient's level of consciousness in intensive care settings and in the operating room. Datex-Ohmeda is developing its own next-generation entropy-based level-of-consciousness monitor, but in the meantime will offer the BIS technology on its System 5 patient monitors. In addition to monitoring routine vital signs, the System 5 capabilities include an electroencephalogram (EEG, including auditory evoked potentials), neuromuscular transmission (NMT), electromyogram (EMG), and end-tidal concentration of volatile anesthetic agents.
We have carefully evaluated all of the currently available consciousness monitoring technologies and the BIS is clearly the most practical and effective product in this field today, said Sami Ervio, managing director of Datex-Ohmeda's European Sales Companies.
