Diagnostic for Early Signs of Sepsis

A new predictive diagnostic is designed to detect early signs of sepsis in order to help prevent onset and curb mortality rates. Posted on 13 Jul 2004
The diagnostic, called ABP-26 (dipeptidyl peptides IV), is based on observed correlations between the degree of sepsis and the level of ABP-26 in urine. Two monoclonal antibodies are used in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) format to detect ABP-26 released from kidney brush border epithelial cells into the urine. The format is based on sandwich ELISA.
"A major contributory factor to the high mortality rates of sepsis (16%), severe sepsis (20%), and septic shock (46%) is the absence of laboratory tests to detect early signs of the disease,” noted Dr. Richard D. Gill, president and CEO of Signet Laboratories (Dedham, MA, USA), which developed the diagnostic. "Sepsis remains very difficult to detect; physicians base their assessments primarily on observations of specific physiological symptoms. For this reason sepsis conditions are often incorrectly attributed to other causes.”
