New Biomarkers for Stroke

A new panel of multiple markers making up a simple blood test, designed for use by emergency medical personnel or doctors in the emergency department, may be able to tell whether a patient has had a stroke. The panel was introduced at the 5th International Stroke Society World Congress in Vancouver (Canada) in June 2004.Posted on 03 Aug 2004
The markers are being evaluated in a clinical trial involving more than 500 patients. Currently, there are 10 centers conducting the trial, and there are plans to expand the trial to 10 additional sites. The markers were developed by Biosite, Inc. (San Diego, CA, USA), which recently introduced the Triage Profiler Shortness of Breath Panel.
"This tool could be extremely exciting for the stroke community,” said James Baranski, CEO of the National Stroke Association. "In this business, time is brain. Anything we can do to quickly diagnose the stroke patient will provide a better chance for a more positive outcome.”
