Australia to Host Conference on Lab Technology

A conference on emergency laboratory technology and the changing clinical laboratory environment will take place in Cairns (Queensland, Australia) on May 29-30, 2006. The meeting, called "Laboratory Medicine in the Future: Planning for Tomorrow's Technology,” is being organized by the AACB (Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists), the AACC (American Association for Clinical Chemistry), the APFCB (Asian Pacific Federation of Clinical Biochemistry), and the IFCC (International Federation of Clinical Chemistry).

Experts from around the world will give practical advice on how to adapt to the "omics” revolution, emerging markers, trends in the workforce and patient populations, patient safety initiatives, information technology (IT) innovations, testing growth areas, new infectious diseases, and pandemics. Industry leaders will discuss the most significant changes that are being introduced to the clinical laboratory and its field.

Special panels will explore the coming IT innovations and how they help to improve patient outcomes. The key speakers include a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) representative who will explain how the agency will regulate new technologies and the move to global standardization.
