About 20-30% of patients with diabetes develop kidney disease, according to the American Diabetes Association. However, studies show that tests for kidney disease are underused. The test, called KidneyScreen At Home, has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It was developed by FlexSite Diagnostics, Inc. (Palm City, FL, USA; www.flexsite.com). The patient uses the company's UriSite urine collection device to collect the urine sample, which is then mailed in a dried state to the company's licensed laboratory. FlexSite has also developed a convenient and affordable home test, called A1c, for glycohemoglobin (HbA1c).
